Scope and content:

Due to the fragility of this collection, patrons must use the microfilm copy. The microfilm and microfilm readers can be found on the Ground Floor of Swem Library (call number LD6051 .W517 1934 B79, reels 1-24). [Originals are stored off-site.]

Records from the administration of College of William and Mary President John Stewart Bryan for the years 1934-1942.

For the most part, headings assigned to folders in their office of origin have been maintained in the box list inventories available here. The records cover the day-to-day business of William and Mary from finances to athletics to students to faculty and include correspondence, reports, and other record formats typically found in offices.

Biographical / historical:

John Stewart Bryan was the nineteenth President of the College of William and Mary from 1934 through 1942. He was a graduate of the University of Virginia and Harvard; lawyer; member of the William and Mary Board of Visitors; publisher of Richmond Times-Dispatch and Richmond News Leader; president of the American Newspaper Publishers Association.

Microfilm must be used in place of original documents. Permission to use the originals mist be obtained by emailing the Director of the SCRC at spcoll@wm.edu. Should premission be granted, requests must be submitted at least 72 hours in advance of the planned visit to allow for retrieval from offsite storage. Consult a staff member for assistance.
