Background

Scope and content:

Handpainted silhouette of William & Mary professor and Episcopal priest, Charles Minnigerode. The silhouette was painted by his granddaughter, Marietta Minnigerode Andrews and is signed by her. Minnigerode is presented in his clergy frock, under a pointed arch, and holding a closed text.

Included is a typescript, which says the following:

"1860

The Reverend Charles Ernest Frederick Minnigerode, D.D. imprisoned at the age of nineteen when a student at the University of Giessen, Germany, for participation in revolutionary activity and the distribution of revolutionary literature. After five years confinement he came to America in 1839, aged twenty-three, secured a Professorship at William and Mary holding the chairs Latin and Greek, thence entered the Episcopal ministry and during the Civil War was pastor of Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis, was with Mr. Davis in prison at Fortress Monroe as his spiritual advisor, and remained pastor of Saint Paul's Church Richmond for thirty-two years."
