Background

Scope and content:

Photograph album of the Trosvig family of Lightfoot, Va. from circa 1930s-1940s. Some of the photographs are dated and identified. The images feature various family members, including John Trosvig and his daughters, Milla, Ida, Clara and Alma, as well as their home, which still stands in Lightfoot.

Biographical / historical:

The Trosvig family moved from Otter Tail County, Minnesota to Lightfoot, Va. sometime around the turn of the 20th century. The family included parents John and Aase (Louise) and their six daughters: Lena (died in Minnesota), Ida, Milla, Alma, Clara, and Emma.

Milla and Ida were school teachers. Milla taught at a school in Hopewell, Va., and Ida taught at the Matthew Whaley School in Williamsburg, Va. Emma died in 1920, and Alma and Clara stayed at home. Alma was the gardener and Clara was the cook.

Clara and Alma established a scholarship at the College of William and Mary in honor of Milla and Ida.*
