Background

Scope and content:

Letter from St George Tucker to Matthew Carey regarding the circulation of a printed letter written to Jedediah Morse "...vindicate the Inhabitants of this city from a most cruel and unprovoked attack...", about Carey's periodical "Guthrie's Grammar" and publication, "The American Museum." Dated July 31, 1795. The circulated letter to Rev. Jedediah Morse from a "Citizen of Williamsburg" (1795) is also included.

Biographical / historical:

St. George Tucker (1752-1827), was born in Bermuda and emigrated to Williamsburg, Virginia where he attended the College of William and Mary. He served in the Revolutionary War, as a judge of the General Court of Virginia, and as professor of law at the College of William and Mary. He was elected to the Supreme Court of Appeals of Virginia. Tucker was appointed to the federal district court for Virginia. He married, firstly, Frances Bland Randolph who was the mother of John Randolph of Roanoke. Ann Frances Bland Tucker (who married John Coalter), Nathaniel Beverley Tucker (1784-1851), also professor of law at the College of William and Mary, and Henry St. George Tucker (1780-1848), jurist, were their children. St. George Tucker married, secondly, Lelia Skipwith Carter.
