Background

Scope and content:

Reminiscences, February 22, 1846 of the War of 1812 and of the American Revolution. Concerns the Battle of Great Bridge, Norfolk County, Virginia, December 9 1775; and the attack on and defense of Craney Island, also in Norfolk County, June 22, 1813.

Biographical / historical:

James Jarvis was born in Portsmouth, Va. in 1791. He served as an orderly sergeant in the Portsmouth Rifles, a militia company. He operated a boatbuilding yard and later inspected timbers for Gosport Navy Yard. He died at Portsmouth in 1862.
