Background

Scope and content:

The papers of George K. Dakin concern his service in the Richmond, Virginia area during the Civil War. Dakin served in voluntary military service in the 1st New Hampshire Battery, from Manchester, New Hampshire, during the Civil War. The collection contains several Muster Rolls (in and out), certificates of promotions, official discharges, and a report written by Dakin's superior, F. M. Edgell, about certain operations of the 1st New Hampshire Battery.

Certificate promoting Dakin to Sergeant in Company "A' of the 1st Regiment of N.H. Artillery by Captain F. M. Edgell. Also included is a notice discharging Dakin from the service of the United States by reason of reenlistment as a Veteran Vvolunteer. Signed by Captain F. M. Edgell.

The full title of the report written by F.M. Edgell, Captain of the 1st N. H. Battery, is as follows: Report of part taken by 1st NH Battery in the operations of the Campaign from May 3rd to July 30th, 1864. The folder also contains Dakin's commission as 1st Sergeant.

The folder contains Dakin's State of New Hampshire Volunteers enlistment documents signed by Allen Tenny and New Hampshire Governor Joseph A. Gilmore, discharge by reason of promotion papers, and muster-in roll for Dakin as 1st Lieutenant of the N.H. Light Artillery, Battery "A", signed by Captain F.B. Doten. Documents date October 9, 1864 through December 3, 1864.

Two muster-out rolls for George K. Dakin, Lieutenant, from the 1st Regiment of the New Hampshire Artillery Volunteers so that he may accept the appointment of Captain. Signed by Captain F.B. Doten. The documents are oversize.

Dakin's promotion to Second Lieutenant in the 3rd regiment of Artillery is signed by President Andrew Johnson and Edwin M. Stanton, Secretary of War. The Special Orders No. 190 conveys the message that Lieutenant George K. Dakin, 3rd U.S. Artillery is assigned to Light Battery "E" of that regiment. Signed by Assistant Adjutant General E.D. Townsend.
