Background

Scope and content:

The collection holds account books of A.B. Smith of Main Street, Toano, Virginia in James City County. The "Account of Chickens and Eggs" ledger from August 1, 1930 to December 1936 has accounts for sales from 1931 to 1936 at the end of the ledger. The financial ledger with an alphabetical index for 1916 and 1917 includes loose papers in the back with financial notes, invoices, and correspondence for the James City County Welfare Committee (1932 -1938) along with some monthly reports and many itemized invoices with names for goods and services given to welfare recipients.

Biographical / historical:

Anderson Benskin Smith was born about 1877. He operated a General Store and raised chickens in Toano, Virginia during the the early to mid 1900's. He was the treasurer of the James City County Welfare Committee during the 1930's.
