Background

Scope and content:

Contains an account book kept by Simon Elliott, Sr. and his son, Simon Elliott, Jr. for sales of snuff and tobacco from their store on 51 State Street in Boston, Massachusetts. The first page includes the details of the partnership between Simon Elliott, Sr. and his son. The major portion of the journal, pages 1-76, records sales of snuff and tobacco, and includes both individuals, such as a female customer, Joanna Winslow, and firms such as Andrew Ritchie & Son. The remaining section of the volume, pages 77-91, consists of cash settlements and personal accounts of the Elliotts. The rest of the volume contains blank pages.

Biographical / historical:

Simon Elliott, Sr. was a businessman in Newton Upper Falls, Massachusetts. He acquired several mills in Newton Upper Falls, in 1778 and he later added a snuff mill. Further information about this individual or organization may be available in the Special Collections Research Center Wiki: .

Acc. 2013.225 was received by Special Collections in August 2013. Purchased for Swem Library with support from the Johns (Pollard) fund.
