Background

Scope and content:

Contains diaries, 1924-1935, of the Westfall family of Garfield Heights, Ohio. Topics include family finances, genealogy, drawings, wildlife, family names and birthdays, and a few notations of daily life, among other topics. Also contains a book of telephone numbers.

Diary spans 1922 – 1927 and contains notations of weather and wildlife patterns. This diary also contains names and birthdays of the Westfall family, his employment at Smerda's Music House, and the home the family was building on East 96th Street. There are some notes about his daughter, Mae Westfall, and her childhood. Six pages are missing.

Diary spans 1927 – 1931. Diary mostly contains notations of changes in the weather and wildlife. In the first few pages, children's names and birthdays are listed. Diary also contains some notations about grocery costs, hunting, money received, and being caught for speeding.

Front titled "Wheather." Diary spans 1931 – 1934 and mostly contains notations of weather, flowers, trees, and sun patterns. Also includes notes on the hunting seasons, animal/bird migrations and habits, a partial eclipse on August 31, 1932, grocery costs, a minor illness, drawings and descriptions of his shotguns, and observations on bluebirds trying to raise young. There are a few notes on the Banking Crisis of 1933.

Includes one diary by Joseph Westfall of Cleveland Ohio from 1934-1935 and a telephone directory. Diary contains observations on weather and wildlife and family names and birthdays.
