Background

Scope and content:

The collection includes l letter written to T. Taylor, dated March 22, 1871 and written on William & Mary letterhead, an August 26, 1871 letter written to Archie Taylor thanking him for donating a volume to the library, his Oct. 1, 1871 letter of resignation as Chair of Latin and French due to health issues, and a printed announcement of the reopening of the College (October 1, 1871),.

Biographical / historical:

Thomas P. McCandlish entered William & Mary as a student in 1853, at the age of 16. A resident graduate in 1859/1860, he taught privately to prepare boys for entrance to William & Mary. In 1860, he became an instructor in the Preparatory Department. During the Civil War, McCandlish served as quartermaster with the rank of captain for the 32nd Virginia Regiment, often within Pickett's Division. In 1866, he was appointed Assistant Professor of Ancient Languages and Mathematics and was promoted to Professor of Latin, French, and Roman and French History in 1870. He resigned from his post in October 1871, with his resignation taking full effect in October 1872.
