Collection contains a single concert advertisement for a segregated show for Marian Anderson. The advertisement reads: S. Hurok presents Marion Anderson "The Great American Singer" at the Mosque Theater. The ad also lists separate seating prices for white and black individuals.

Biographical / historical:

The document advertises a concert performance by Marian Andersom on Friday November 22, 1947 at 8:30 PM at the Mosque Theater. The audience was segregated with Black audience members being restricted to the Mezzanine and Balcony seating.

Marian Anderson was an American contralto and figure in the Civil Rights Movement. In 1955, Anderson became the first African American woman to perform at the Metropolitan Opera. Anderson performed at the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Anderson recieved numerous awards including the first Presidental Medal of Freedom.
