Background

Scope and content:

The Richmond Lesbian-Feminists Flyers collection is comprised, in bulk, of the newsletter of the Richmond Lesbian-Feminists organization, which was called the Richmond Lesbian-Feminist Flyer. The collection also contains other printed material related to Richmond Lesbian-Feminists, and newsletters and other publications from related local and North American womens' and lesbian organizations. The bulk of the materials date from around 1975-1996, with a few items from 2015.

Biographical / historical:

In 1975, Beth Marschak (1951-2026), Mary Dean Carter, and a number of other women co-founded Richmond Lesbian-Feminists after attending a Virginia Women's Political Caucus Meeting, where Ms. Marschak led a workshop on Laws for Lesbian Legal Rights. Richmond Lesbian-Feminists (RLF) quickly founded their newsletter, the RLF Flyer, as a way to communicate about events, activism opportunities, and more. The Flyer began as a single page publication and expanded and evolved as time passed and technology advanced. By the 1990s the Flyer was word-processed and computerized. In 2025, Richmond Lesbian-Feminists celebrated their 50th anniversary--the information once in the Flyer now conveyed via social media.
