Background

Scope and content:

This collection consists of electrostatic copies of two newclippings (1961 and undated) and a letter from John G. Zirkle, White Hall, New Market, Shenandoah County, Virginia, to his brother Benjamin Zirkle, Jefferson County, Tennessee, February 9, 1855.

In his letter, John G. Zirkle discusses family health, visits from friends, their difficulties with the Manassas Gap Railroad Company who exercised eminent domain and located their railroad tracks across the family farm splitting it in two without adequate compensation, and the shortage of grain due to the earlier drought.

One of the newsclippings concerns the sixty-fifth wedding anniversary of Mollie Bozman and Walter L. Allen of Wylie, Collin County, Texas, married in 1896. The other newsclipping includes an interview with Charles F. Allen (1840-1907) of Wylie, Collin County, Texas, a Confederate veteran born near Lazy Springs, Rockingham County, Virginia, and his obituary.

Charles F. Allen enlisted in Company C, 3rd Tennessee Regiment, under Colonel John C. [Vaughn ?] and fought at First and Second Manassas, Winchester, Seven Pines, Battle of the Wilderness and Chancellorsville.
