Biographical / historical:

Thomas D. Ranson, UVA Law 1868, was born 19 May 1843 near Charleston, West Virginia. In 1861 he joined the Confederate Army, and fought under the orders of generals Robert E. Lee and J. E. B. Stuart. He was captured by the Union Forces in 1864 and was imprisoned at Fort McHenry. After his release in 1865, he farmed and in 1868 he got his law degree from the University of Virginia. He practiced law in Staunton, VA, until 1918.
