Scope and content:

The Joyce Crary show horse photo album (1940s; 0.2 cubic feet) contains photographs labeled by hand in white ink. 10 x 13 with 35 leaves containing around 120 black and white photographs, and a few pieces of ephemera, inserted into corner mounts. Photographs feature Joyce Crary, her family, and her friends and horses at the family ranch near Chico, California. Horses and riders are shown jumping, racing, and performing trick riding of various types. One image is of Joyce, her father, and a horse at a USO show and one image shows the horse Pawnee Sue participating in a rehabilitation program for wounded WWII veterans. Another depicts Pawnee Sue being ridden by a former marine as part of Mare Island's physical rehabilitation program. Some clippings are related to Chico Riding Club.

Biographical / historical:

Joyce Crary lived in California during the 1940s, where she and her family raised horses at their ranch near Chico. Crary also competed in local show-horse competitions and helped with physical therapy for injured WWII veterans.
