Background

Scope and content:

This collection consists of reproductions of bronze plaques that served as a memorial to University of Virginia alumni that died in the Civil War fighting for the Confederacy.

Biographical / historical:

The University of Virginia erected Confederate plaques to the Rotunda in 1903 as a memorial to the UVA alumni that died in the Civil War. The bronze plaques were a gift of the Confederate Memorial Association and the Albemarle Chapter of the Daughters of the Confederacy. In September 2017, following the Unite the Right march, the Board of Visitors voted to remove the plaques from the Rotunda. The resolution was spurred by a list of 10 demands championed by the Black Student Union and supported by various University groups in response to the events of August 11 and 12.

Processing information:

The plaques were digitized by the Digital Production Group in April 2018 and transcribed by the John L. Nau III Center for Civil War History in February 2019.
