Background
- Scope and content:
-
This collection contains a five-page reminiscence from Anna Fayles, an alumna, and 28 slides documenting the UVA YMCA basketball league from 1965 to 1968. She describes coaching a newly integrated recreational basketball league over three years. The slides document the banquets for her first three teams.
- Biographical / historical:
-
University of Virginia student, Ann Fayles,(from 1965-1968) volunteered to coach basketball to boys in the Charlottesville area through the University Young Mens Christian Association during the first years of school integration. Fayles taught the boys basketball, tutored them in their schoolwork and encouraged them to attend college. According to Fayles, there were several white teams and two all Black teams, but her team was the only integrated team.
