Edith Mattie Davis Booker is one of the last living graduates of Hartshorn Memorial College. At 91 (in 2001), she lives next door to the house she grew up in on Richmond-Henrico Turnpike on Richmond's north side.
Mrs. Booker attended high school at Hartshorn from 1924-1927. She went on to Virginia Union and graduated in 1931 with a B.A. From 1931-34 she taught English at the Northern Neck Academy in Richmond County. Her husband, Sylvester Booker, was the principal of the school. It became the Richmond County High School and Mrs. Booker continued to teach English, history and Latin until 1941.
She raised three children for the next 13 years, earning a library degree from Columbia University over 6 summers in that time. In 1954, she went to work for the Richmond schools as a librarian and worked for 20 years at Blackwell Middle School before retiring in 1974.
Mrs. Booker's daughter, Frances, graduated from Union in 1965. Sylvester Booker was a 1927 graduate of Union.
