Background

Scope and content:

In addition to the nearly 60 letters of response to Putziger’s query, materials include copies of letters Putziger composed as well as published directories of Senators, members of the House of Representatives, and Committees of the 102nd and 103rd Congresses (1991-1993). Most materials are dated April-May, 1992. Copies of letters dated November 22, 1993, addressed to Presidents Carter, Nixon, Ford, and Reagan suggest the apparently low rate of response from Senators and members of the House of Representatives did not discourage Putziger, yet there is no indication that Putziger completed the project he set out to produce. Forms of individuals’ names listed below are derived primarily from their letterhead.

Biographical / historical:

This collection includes approximately 60 letters from members of Congress in response to Craig J. Putziger’s request for a list of the five books they found most influential. Copies of Putziger’s initial query indicate his intent to compile “a list of books that have had the most influence on the lives of our political leaders,” and published directories of committees and members of the House of Representatives and the Senate suggest he sought this information from all members of Congress.
