Abstract:
The collection contains research files on VMFA history created by Robert "Bob" Merritt, who was a theater and arts critic for the "Richmond Times-Dispatch" newspaper from the 1970s through the 1990s and wrote about VMFA frequently. The boxes were originally labeled "narrative history," a project which was sponsored by the museum's Marketing and Public Affairs department, probably as part of the plans to commemorate the museum's 50th anniversary in 1986.

Background

Biographical / historical:

Robert "Bob" Merritt was a theater and arts critic for the "Richmond Times-Dispatch" newspaper from the 1970s through the 1990s and wrote about VMFA frequently. He authored all of the articles in the supplement that was published by the "Richmond Times-Dispatch" on January 12, 1986 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the museum's opening.

Custodial history:

The collection was transferred to the VMFA Library from the Marketing and Public Affairs department in the 1990s. The original boxes were labeled "narrative history," a project which was sponsored by the department, probably as part of the larger plans to commemorate the museum's 50th anniversary.
