Scope and content:

The Dr. Donald N. Dedmon Official Papers contains papers and materials from Dr. Donald N. Dedmon related to his time as President of Radford College and Radford University. His papers include Commencement Programs from 1972-1944, nine documents of or about the Shaner Report, and information on the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia. Documents housed in this collection refer to documents and materials related to Radford's change from college to univeristy such as publications and newsletters, minutes, committee report, Homecoming and Convocation Speech, and bills relating to Radford College.

Boxes 12- 14 cover the topic of the Western Region Consortium with documents such as Consortium notes/meetings, the Radford College comprehensive plan for the Western Region Consortium, and various materials on the meetings of the Western Region Consortium ranging the years 1975-1990. Box 15 is devoted to the Task Force on Innovation and houses materials such as meeting minutes and agendas, curriculum proposals, suggestions for various departments such as History, Sociology and English, the honors program, associate degrees, graduate and masters programs and teaching programs.

These papers hold a variety of speeches made by Dr. Dedmon spanning the years 1972-1993.

Biographical / historical:

Dr. Donald Newton Dedmon (President:1972-1994), a Missouri native, received his undergraduate degree from Southwestern Missouri State College, and later received his M.A. and Ph.D. at the University of Iowa. He taught at both the high school and college levels before he moved into university administration at Colorado State University and Marshall University. Dr. Dedmon served as Marshall's executive vice president and acting president before coming to Radford University, where he was president for two decades. During his time at Radford, the university experienced unprecedented growth in campus size, curriculum, and student population. Dr. Dedmon was an ardent supporter of faculty teaching during an era where research was valued over classroom work.

Box 1-7: Speeches. Dupicates were removed from boxes 1-7 upon an accrual to the collection in the fall of 2012, which now make up Boxes 16-32. Speeches remaining from Boxes 1-7 have been consolidated into Box 33.This collection now begins with Box 8.
