The United States Colored Troops were authorized by Congress in 1863. During the "War of Rebellion" over 180,000 African Americans, several in the Union Army. Two of the many were apart of the 30th and 43rd Colored Regiments. These two units were involoved in the heavy fighting around Petersburg in 1864.
