Scope and content:

The collection consists of materials regarding the integration of public schools in Norfolk, Virginia and urban planning materials for southeastern Virginia cities collected by Carl Abbott, a history professor at Old Dominion University.

Biographical / historical:

Carl Abbott was born December 3, 1944 in Knoxville Tennessee. Abbott studied at Swarthmore College where he received his B.A. in 1966 and furthered his studies at the University of Chicago, receiving a M.A. in 1967 and a Ph.D. in 1971. From 1972-1978, he taught history at Old Dominion University and currently teaches American history of urban development at the School of Urban Studies and Planning at Portland State University.
