The Old Dominion University Alumni Association was established in 1957 as an independent and all volunteer organization. In 1961, it became part of the university and gained paid personnel and a president. Through the office of Alumni Relations, the Alumni Association focused on keeping graduates connected to the university through reunions and alumni weekends, and contributing to the university by way of regular fundraisers. The Alumni Association grew over the years, forming specialized chapters such as one for the Nursing School in 1977 and a chapter devoted to the School of Business in 1988. In 1990, the Alumni Association joined with the Office of Government Relations to launch the Alumni Legislative Network, dedicated to lobbying on behalf of Old Dominion University.
