Scope and Contents

This collection contains four documents and two fragments pertaining to the debts of James Alexander. In order of chronology, one document refers to the hiring of Alexander by the Washington College Board of Trustees to build the cupola that sits on top of Washington Hall (circa 1843). The two fragments pieces appear to be from the same document, which was a deed between Robert White and Alexander (April 14, 1843). Robert White was a trustee at Washington College. The deed is referenced in another document in the collection dated March 24, 1845. There is a legal document outlining Alexander's failure to pay rent on his house to Matthew White (March 27, 1844). The March 24, 1845 document is a lawsuit filed by Alexander against Washington College for breach of contract. The last item is a document dated February 7, 1868 doesn't appear to have a direct connection to Alexander but is a legal document regarding the Lexington Hotel.
