Background

Scope and content:

Includes letters to Kemper on various business matters, including three letters during his tenure as governor. Among the correspondents are E. J. and T. J. Polk, Robert A. Richardson, and William J. Robertson.

Biographical / historical:

Kemper was an alumnus of Washington College (Class of 1842) and a Madison County and Richmond, Va., lawyer. He also served as Virginia governor from 1874-1878.
