Background

Scope and content:

This collection consists of typescript transcriptions of twenty letters from George Bell Revercomb to his future wife, Sarah Elizabeth Wallace, during his service as a Confederate cavalryman during the American Civil War. The letters are written from Gordonsville, Manassas, Winchester, and Harrisonburg, Virginia. His final letter is written from Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond, Va in May 1864. In it he mentions his wound in the Battle of the Wilderness, the death of General JEB Stuart, his religion, and wonders about the condition of his friends and brothers in his company.

Biographical / historical:

George Bell Revercomb, of Bath County, Virginia, was a member of Company F, Eleventh Virginia Cavalry, Laurel Brigade, during the American Civil War. He married Sarah Elizabeth Wallace in 1864.
