Background

Scope and content:

This collection consists of a letter dated March 20, 1860 written by William Walker Anderson to Jefferson Campbell Anderson. The elder Anderson was in Chattanooga while Jefferson was away at school in Sale Creek, Tennessee. The letter is three pages and includes the original mailing envelope. There are two additional notes probably written by William on behalf of his six year old son Milo and four year old daughter Molly. The letter references Sabbath school and farming on the family's plantation. The elder Anderson also references the enslaved people working on the plantation stating that they "send howdy to you and wish to sea [sic] you." He uses a racist term when mentioning them.
