This collection consists of letters written or sent to James McDowell between 1835-1849. Two items are printed letters of invitation to Democratic/Democratic Republican dinners. Included is a letter dated August 1843 written by William Richardson, adjutant-general of Virginia, a letter dated November 26, 1844 written by Francis N. Watkins, Secretary of the Board of Hampden-Sidney College, and an 1844 invitation to visit the encampment of the volunteers of the town of Portsmouth. Subjects include dinners, politics, and meetings.

James McDowell was born on October 13, 1795 in Rockbridge County, Virginia. He served as a member of the Virginia State House of Delegates, as the 29th Governor of Virginia, and as a member of the U. S. House of Representatives. He died on August 24, 1851.
