Background
- Scope and content:
-
This collection consists of 33 textbooks (published between 1852-1873) used by VMI cadets during the 1860s and 1870s, and two cadet notebooks.
These textbooks contain written inscriptions of names, notes, and drawings. Most of the inscriptions are from Robert H. Cousins (VMI Class of 1867) and Hillary A. Cousins (VMI Class of 1875).
One notebook (circa 1875) belonged to Hillary A. Cousins and contains notes on a variety of topics, including chemistry, natural philosophy, geometry, and metallurgy. Also contains a list of books read for the period of 1874 to 1875. The other notebook (circa 1868) likely belonged to Edward B. Jones (VMI Class of 1868). This notebook contains notes on civil engineering lectures.
- Physical facet:
- Many of the textbooks are severely damaged with spines that are separated from the binding, water damage, dirt/dust, and general damage.
