This collection consists of correspondence from Carlton B. Shafer (VMI Class of 1864) to his family dated 1860 to 1865. Shafter details cadet life during this period and includes discussion of an impending Civil War and when the cadets were called to service in the Confederate States of America. The letters also discuss skirmishes happening around Leesburg, Virginia.
This collection also includes correspondence (dated 1862) between members of the Shafer family.

Carlton B. Shafer was born in 1844 in Loudoun County, Virginia, to Frederick William Shafer and Susanna Shafer (Lezear). He graduated from Virginia Military Institute in 1864 and was a New Market cadet, Third Cadet Captain, Company B. He went on to become a lawyer and legislator. He died in 1906.
