Background

Scope and content:

This collection consists of items related to Robert N. Smith, including photographs, letters, and unit newspapers dating from his service overseas in World War II with Company M, 255th Infantry Regiment, 63rd Division. This collection also includes a cadet scrapbook (1946-1950) that is largely newspaper clippings.

Biographical / historical:

Robert N. Smith was born in 1925. He attended VMI from 1943 to 1944 and then left to serve in the United States Army during World War II. He returned to VMI after the War, graduating in 1950 (his VMI Class designation is 1947). Smith was killed in action in 1951 in Korea.
