This collection (four items) consists of items dating from John W. Steenbergen's cadetship, including a one volume notebook that contains copied poetry and notes, two essays, and his VMI account book documenting school expenses (1846-1849).
- Biographical / historical:

John William Steenbergen was born in 1831 in Mason County, [West] Virginia. He graduated from VMI in 1849 and spent his life as a farmer in Mason County. He was the organizer and first president of the Mason County Agricultural Association. Steenbergen also served as a member of the House of Delegates and served several times as a member of the Mason County court. He died in 1916.
