This collection consists of correspondence (1831-1865, bulk 1831-1855) of James M. Mason, United States legislator and Confederate diplomat. The collection consists of letters concerning personal financial matters and other personal business. One letter to "Mr. Dallas" (dated August 11, 1855) relates to presidential politics. One letter to "My dear Col." written from London, England on May 16, 1865, comments on the situation in the South after defeat.

James M. Mason was a United States Representative and United States Senator from Virginia. He was a grandson of George Mason and represented the Confederate States of America as appointed commissioner of the Confederacy to the United Kingdom and France between 1861 and 1865.
