Background

Scope and content:

This collection consists of items related to the Lane family, including a school report card (dated 1892) for Lottie Lane, daughter of James H. Lane (VMI Class of 1854). The report card is from the Auburn (Alabama) School District and signed by James H. Lane. This collection also includes a railroad engine signed "James H. Lane, 1899."

Biographical / historical:

James Henry Lane was born in 1833 in Mathews Court House, Virginia. He graduated from VMI in 1854. During the Civil War he was a General with the Confederate Army. After the War he was an engineer and educator. Lane died in 1907 in Auburn, Alabama.
