Background

Scope and content:

This collection (approximately 100 items) consists of papers from the career of Gilbert L. Newbold. The papers are primarily concerned with Newbold's career with the United States Information Agency and Voice of America (VOA) in Southeast Asia during the 1950s and 1960s, and includes letters and memos concerning the VOA operation in South Vietnam. Other items include his military personnel records and documents from his State Department assignments.

Biographical / historical:

Gilbert Lawrie Newbold was born in 1920 in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He graduated from VMI in 1942. During World War II he was an intelligence officer. After the War he was a State Deptartment foreign service officer, and was Chief East Asia and Pacific Branch, United States Information Agency/Voice of America during the 1950s and 1960s. Newbold died in 1979 in Roanoke, Virginia.
