Background

Scope and content:

This collection consists of one letter (dated October 6, 1863) that confirms and gives details of the death of James K. Marshall (VMI Class of 1860) who was killed during the Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The letter was written to James' parents, Edward C. Marshall and Rebecca Peyton Marshall, by his cousin, F. Lewis Marshall.

Biographical / historical:

James Keith Marshall was born in 1839 and graduated VMI in 1860. During the Civil War he was a Colonel with the 52nd North Carolina Infantry Regiment. He was killed in action during the Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania (Pickett's Charge) on July 3, 1863.
