Background

Scope and content:

This collection consists of one letter (dated September 10, 1843) from William J. Green to his father, Duff Green. The letter describes in detail the Corps march to Rockbridge Alumni, Warm, Hot, and White Sulphur Springs, Virginia.

Biographical / historical:

William James Green was born in 1825 in Falmouth, Virginia. He graduated VMI in 1846 and went on to become a farmer and merchant. During the Civil War he was a Lieutenant Colonel with the 47th Virginia Infantry Regiment. In 1862 Green was killed in action at the Battle of Cold Harbor, Virginia.
