Background

Scope and content:

Postmaster's account and record book for Tenth Legion, Virginia kept by postmaster Samuel Y. Beam. The account book tracks daily transactions; quarterly postal accounts; inventory of stamps, cards, and envelopes; and special delivery accounts. The account book is approximately half full.

Biographical / historical:

Samuel Y. Beam (1870-1944) was a resident of Timberville in Rockingham County for the bulk of his life. In addition to being postmaster for Tenth Legion, Beam had other occupations. According to census and other vital records, Beam was a salesman, teacher, and carpenter at various points in his life.
