Background

Scope and content:

Primarily comprises professional papers of Steve Smith ('71, '75M), former Associate Vice President of Constituent Relations, Director of Alumni Relations, and Assistant Director of Admissions at James Madison University. Materials include administrative records related to university admissions, advancement, and alumni relations as well as planning documents for major events such as Ronald Carrier's 80th birthday, James Madison Day, and Jonathan Alger's 2013 inauguration. One folder of materials relate to Smith's time as a student and concern the February 1970 student protest.

Biographical / historical:

Steve Smith ('71, '75M) was a two-time graduate of Madison College ("Double Duke") and long-time university employee in Constituent Relations, Alumni Relations, and Admissions. He fully retired from JMU in 2019 after more than 35 years at the university.

Acquisition information:
Donated by Steve Smith in multiple accessions from 2015 to 2022.
Processing information:

Three-dimensional university memorabilia and ephemera, materials are not specifically reflective of Smith's work, were separated and added to an artificial collection of like objects.

Copies of university publications were either not retained due to duplication, filed elsewhere in related vertical files, or cataloged bibliographically.
