Background

Scope and content:

One disbound school register for Shenandoah County Public Schools, specifically white schools located in the Ashby Magisterial District. Each page of the register lists the teacher's name, school number (4, 25, 3), students' names, their respective ages (ranging from 9 to 23), branches of study pursued, and attendance records for the recorded period (typically one month). Other information recorded includes number of pupils on the roll, average daily attendance, percent of attendance, total days present at school, average age of pupils, number of new students during the recorded period, number of students dropped during the recorded period, number of students over the age of 21, and number of students from other districts. These statistics are also further broken down by gender. The number of visits to each school by the county superintendent, district trustees, and others is also documented. The textbooks adopted by the county and used for each subject are listed in the front of the register. A summary of each school includes style of school house, rented or owned by the district, number of rooms, size and pitch of rooms, heating and ventilation, attached acreage, and the furniture belonging to the schools.

Biographical / historical:

The Ashby Magisterial District in Shenandoah County comprises Mt. Jackson and the surrounding communities of Mt. Clifton, Cabin Hill, Orkney Springs, Hamburg, Rinkerton, and Hawkinstown. During the time this register was created, Shenandoah County Public Schools were segregated. The schools represented in the register are only known by their school number (4, 25, 3). According to Lake's 1885 Atlas of Shenandoah & Page Counties Virginia, Public School No. 4 was located on Main St. in Mt. Jackson. Further research suggests this is the Mt. Jackson High and Graded School. The building is presently located at 5790 Main St. in Mt. Jackson.
