Background

Scope and content:

The papers almost exclusively comprise speeches and remarks given by Linwood Rose during the course of his time as president of James Madison University. Select speeches include the corresponding program for the event. Events include Constitution Day, James Madison Day, Greater Madison, graduations and commencements, annual faculty and staff meetings, and others. Materials related to Rose's September 1999 inauguration include programs, invitations, correspondence, and other ephemera.

Additional materials include photographs and digital files (photographs, speeches, visual and textual elements) that made up Rose's official university website.

Biographical / historical:

Dr. Linwood H. Rose served as James Madison University's fifth president from 1998-2012. Rose holds degrees from Virginia Tech, the University of Tennessee, and the University of Virginia. He joined JMU in August 1975 as Assistant Director of Residence Halls and held numerous other positions at the university including acting president (July 1997-January 1998) after Ronald Carrier's retirement.

During Rose's tenure as president, 20 new academic programs were implemented, enrollment grew by 37 percent, 25 major buildings were constructed, 2.4 million square feet were added to campus, and the university's budget more than doubled.

Acquisition information:
Transfers occurred in 1999, 2014, and 2016. The 2016 accrual was transferred in July 2016 by Donna Burch, administrative assistant in the Office of the President.
