Background
- Scope and content:
-
One bound volume of meter readings presumably taken by a Staunton-based public utility company and loose (photocopied) balance sheets for the Electric Supply Company of the South (Staunton, Va.). The meter readings document the customer's name and address, amount of kilowatt-hours used per month, and the amount charged to the customer. All customers have Staunton addresses and include private individuals and businesses. The balance sheets include lists of assets and liabilities, profit and loss statements, operating statements, and analyses of interest payable.
The balance sheets and meter readings do not appear to have been created by the same corporate body. The bound volume also includes loose papers referencing the Staunton Lighting Company and the Virginia Public Service Company.
- Biographical / historical:
-
The Electric Supply Company of the South operated in Staunton at 24 N. Central Ave. in the Central Realty Building. The company sold electric appliances and wired and installed electric light.
The presumed creator of the meter readings ledger is a Staunton-based public utility company.
- Acquisition information:
- Acquired from Tim Abbott Americana's March 2024 catalog of Virginia And African-American History.
- Processing information:
