Background

Scope and content:

The Larry R. Huffman Papers comprise paper records and slide negatives relating primarily to the history of Rockingham County Schools. A group of slides also document historic Broadway, Virginia businesses, transportation, churches and schools, and landmarks.

Much of the paper materials document the now defunct Bridgewater High School and Bridgewater Elementary School and include accreditation certificates, term reports, and annual reports. The reports include demographics, financial information, attendance records, lists of faculty and graduates, and programs of study.

A group of six photographs are largely unidentified outside of photographer's names and locations. They do not appear to exclusively document Rockingham County people or places. A group portrait photograph taken by Dean Studios in Harrisonburg likely features graduates from a local school.

The slides were compiled and collected by Huffman for his research but not necessarily originally taken by him.

Biographical / historical:

Larry R. Huffman (1942-2022) of Singers Glen, Virginia was a long-time educator and principal in Rockingham County Public Schools including Elkton Elementary, Plains Elementary, and Lacey Spring Elementary. He was also an adjunct professor in James Madison University's College of Education for 19 years. In addition to his career in education, Huffman conducted research on the history of schools in Rockingham County.
