Ledger account book for the treasurer of Shenandoah County, Virginia. Records public school teacher salaries, school supplies, contingency and other teacher fund expenditures, primarily for the Ashby School District. Also includes expense information on: books for indigent children, lumber for making desks (Mt. Jackson School), and room rents for schools including the African Church (Mt. Jackson) School. Names listed in the account book include John Wesley Wayland Jr. (1829-1899), Joseph H. Ruby (1841-1915), Mollie D. Lupton, W.S. Kennedy, Ephraim Shaver, Mary M. Branson, and William A. Mohler, among others.
A printed sheet is adhered to the back inside cover: "First Apportionment of school funds for 1879-80." It lists fund sources and amounts (ex. from dog tax, county funds, state funds, treasurer's com. on state funds) for the following districts: Lee, Ashby, Madison, Johnston, Stonewall, Davis). Half of page is missing; bottom portion of page remains, with following information: J. H. Grabill, C.S.S., December 5, 1879. Includes separate state school fund receipt, dated January 5, 1880, for an Ashby School District commission.

Shenandoah County's Ashby District, which this account book primarily documents, comprises Mt. Jackson, Hawkinstown, Hamburg, Rinkerton, Mt. Clifton, Conicville, Hudson's Cross Roads, Shenandoah Alum Springs, and Orkney Springs.
Due to the general nature of the contents of the account book, a fuller biographical/historical note or administrative history is not appropriate.
