Background
- Scope and content:
-
The Centennial Dukes Scrapbook, 2003-2006, is a disbound scrapbook that documents some of the highlights of the freshman year of the class of 2008, better known as the Centennial Dukes. The scrapbook, comprising photographs, anecdotes, clippings, loose issues of university publications, and printed ephemera, documents athletics, student clubs and organizations, dorm life, special events, the 2004 NCAA Division I National Championship football team, Duke Dog competing in the Capital One Mascot Challenge, and general news.
- Biographical / historical:
-
James Madison University celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2008. As part of the celebration, the university decided to chronicle the happenings of the class of 2008 with the creation of the Centennial Dukes Club. Led by Michelle Hite ('88), managing editor of Madison Magazine, as the club's advisor, students volunteered to help with events, work on the Centennial Dukes web site, write articles on fellow freshmen for Montpelier magazine, and provide scrapbooks and video diaries of their four years at JMU.
- Acquisition information:
- Transferred to Special Collections in October 2012 by the Alumni Association. No transfer agreement or correspondence related to this transfer exists.
- Appraisal information:
-
The scrapbook was transferred with four CDs of images that are physically included as part of the scrapbook's contents. As a result, the CDs were discarded.
- Custodial history:
-
The scrapbook was created by the Centennial Dukes Club and presumably transferred to the Alumni Association after its creation.
- Processing information:
-
The scrapbook was originally processed circa 2013. At this time the scrapbook was inexplicably disbound and rehoused into folders. Per the original finding aid, the rationale for disbinding is as follows: "When processing the collection it was necessary to take the scrapbook out of its original binder so that each section could have its own folder. It was also necessary to take the collection out of the original binder because it had to all fit in the Hollinger box necessary for its proper storage." The collection was minimally reprocessed in October 2022 at which point the collection number was changed to UA 0059, cataloged as such because the Centennial Dukes Club was a formal university student group, and the scrapbook was removed from folders and rehoused as a single unit into a flat box.
- Arrangement:
-
