Background
- Scope and content:
-
The Bridgewater, Virginia Photographs, circa 1900, comprise five matted black-and-white photographs documenting Bridgewater, Virginia and North River.
Four of the five photographs were identified by local historian C. E. May (1903-1997) and include descriptive captions on the backs of the matting. The photographs are undated but an approximate date of 1900 was applied by the archivist based on contextual clues including style of carriage and clothing.
The photographs are matted and include ink captions on the backs as well as a James Madison University Special Collections stamp.
The photographs were previously described as part of the Shenandoah Local History Collection (SC 5055): "Series VI holds five black and white photographs of Bridgewater, Virginia. These images show an old woolen mill, fields with the town behind them, two men in a carriage by the river, the river with fields and the town on either side, and one unidentified photo of a street in winter. They were identified in 1985 by local historian C. E. May."
