Background

Scope and content:

The Ellen Stulting Wyant Photograph Album, 1930-1944, comprises photographs of Stulting's early childhood, her time as a student at Madison College, and scenes from the University of Virginia.

All of the 42 photographs are captioned and feature Stulting, her family, friends, classmates, and outdoor scenes. Madison College photographs include Stulting and her classmates, the "Spotswood Gang," the Quad, and snow scenes. UVa scenes include Minor Hall, Alderman Library, East Range, the Rotunda, and Scott Stadium. Other photographs document Charlottesville's Miller School, Richmond, and the Green Lantern restaurant and cottages located outside of Winchester.

The album's front cover features a hand-painted tulip detail with the saying "Lest I Forget." The album is missing its back cover. The bulk of the pages are blank and do not include photographs.

Biographical / historical:

Ellen Blanche Stulting (1923-2013) was born in Hillsboro, West Virginia to Sadie Norris Stulting and Claude Stulting. By the fall of 1940, when she matriculated at Madison College, Stulting was a resident of Charlottesville, Virginia. She graduated in 1944 and received a bachelor's degree in education. While a student at Madison College, Stulting was a member of the Glee Club, Aeolian Club, and Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA). She attended the University of Virginia where she received a master's of education degree. Early in her teaching career, Stulting taught in Waynesboro and Crozet. She taught for many years at the Venable School in Charlottesville. Stulting married Thomas Raymond Wyant Jr. in 1946.

Acquisition information:
The photograph album was acquired from Max Rambod Rare Books in August 2021.
Arrangement:

The photograph album remains bound with a missing back cover. The photographs are in the same order in which the album was received.
