Background

Scope and content:

The Sarah Maria Everett Collection on James Madison, 1816, 1907, comprises a December 9, 1816 issue of the Boston Gazette and a 1907 portrait engraving of James Madison. The newspaper contains James Madison's final address as president (pg. 2).

Biographical / historical:

Sarah Maria Everett, a Juneau, Alaska resident, transferred to James Madison University in the fall of 2010 as a theater major. She researched and interpreted James Madison, often dressing as Madison for football games and other public events. Everett graduated from JMU in December 2012.

Acquisition information:
Donated by Sarah Maria Everett in 2012, during her senior year as a student at James Madison University.
Custodial history:

The newspaper was a gift to the donor from her parents, purchased from an antique dealer. The engraving was given to the donor by Pat Thompson, a longtime docent at Montpelier. This was a retirement gift to Thompson from staff at Montpelier who purchased it from Jentz Prints in Brunswick, Maryland.
