- Biographical / historical:
-
The National Association for Music Education (NAfME) was founded in Keokuk, Iowa in 1907 as the Music Supervisors National Conference (MENC) with the mission "to advance music education by promoting the understanding and making of music by all." Since its conception, NAfME has created numerous branches (known as Federated Associations) in all 50 states including Washington, D.C., with additional branches in Europe and India to help advance its mission in supporting music educators.
The Virginia Music Educators Association (VMEA) was created in 1945 as a branch of NAfME which was known from 1934-1998 as MENC. The first president of the VMEA was Sena Wood, serving from 1944-1946, and all the presidents after have served a single term of two years. As stated by the official website, the mission of the VMEA is "to promote quality education throughout the Commonwealth by providing leadership, instructional resources and professional development opportunities for Virginia's music educators."
